VCA Groups and Audio SubGroups are two different things with different functionalities, so you decide what you need. Which actual channel is assigned to which VCA will change on a scene by scene basis. We use the automation systems on the modern digital consoles to move channels into and out of VCA groups, so for every scene you will have: female lead, male lead, female chorus, male chorus, band, drums, FX.

It's how you can have a single guy mixing a live musical with 100 plus channels. We will assign a single input fader to a VCA and that fader might change on a scene by scene basis. But I also come from a live sound background and especially in theatre, we use VCAs slightly differently. I always use VCA groups in every project I work on. This lets me mix the different microphone groups together easily, and I can automate individual faders, and then push or pull the VCA master fader up or down and the automation will also follow. I have 9 VCA groups: NOS, OMNIs, Flanks, House, Solo, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion.
Right now, I'm working on a mix for the Dvorak 9th Symphony. You can usually also move a single fader in that group to make fine adjustments without affecting the other faders in that group. and you can mix off the VCAs, pushing each group up and down while maintaining the relative balance within the group. So, you can have VCA groups for vocals, guitars, drums, horns, auxiliary percussion, etc. Anything that is pre-fade won't be affects by the VCA group changes. So any changes you make with a VCA master fader only affects the post-fade sends of the individual channels. A single fader that you can grab to adjust a whole groups of faders at the same time, and keep all of the faders in that group the same relative to each other. VCAs are NOT Auxes or Sub groups, and you shouldn't use them the same way. That's why you can't insert any effects on their channels. VCAs, or DCAs as some manufacturers call them, do not pass any audio.
